In 1922 Joseph A. Byrnes founded Byrnes-Conway as a public works contractor, specializing in the building and maintaining of macadam roads. That business grew to include bituminous concrete construction on many of Cincinnati's vital roads and viaducts as well as ownership of two bituminous concrete
plants.

Joe's two sons, Martin J. and James T. Byrnes, purchased Armrel Construction Company in Middletown in 1958, expanding the companies' operations geographically. In 1968, Jimmy invited his new son-in-law, Michael E. Baughman, to manage Armrel, and shortly thereafter, the company underwent significant expansion in its site development operation, packaging projects which included land clearing, grading, installation of sewer, gas and water lines, construction of streets, sidewalks, and curbs.

Mike, my father, brought the two companies together as The Armrel-Byrnes Company in 1974 with a new company headquarters in Blue Ash. Over the next 18 years he created a team of highly skilled and knowledgeable people, and he cultivated an extensive customer base which relied on the quality project that Armrel-Byrnes is known for. In 1993 I returned to Armrel-Byrnes to carry on that tradition of excellence.
